After a tit-for-tat first-half of few chances, whereby the blues of Merseyside and London largely cancelled each other out, Everton took the sword to the current FA Cup holders.
Unfortunately, as has been the case numerous times this season, the toffees only had one goal to show for their periods of dominance and ended up succumbing to an equaliser on the counter-attack from a corner in their favour. Both sides then had the opportunity to win the game, Chelsea from a Ramires drive that crashed off the post and Everton from an audacious Beckford volley that Cech tipped over, but the tie will now go to a replay.
While the commendable second-half performance meant it felt disappointing to draw there were plenty of positives to take in-light of the grey clouds that engulfed Goodison against West Ham in the game that preceded this fixture.
As has often been the case this season the star men in blue were Fellaini, Baines, and Coleman but credit must go to the whole team – with particular plaudits for Johnny Heitinga, who managed to keep a typically melodramatic Didier Drogba quiet, Louis Saha who lead the line as we know he can (injuries permitting), and Jack Rodwell who showed in flashes the quality of touch driving forward that we all hope he will continue to develop.
